Solid Shelf Rock
When compared to bullet tooth rock bits, core bits are much faster when drilling in solid rock due to the fact that a core bit is only cutting a few square inches of rock around the out side vs. the bullet tooth that has to grind up every square inch of the rock. The rock core is easily removed from the hole vs. the powdered rock that tends to fall back down the flighting of the bullet tooth and is virtually impossible to clean out with hand diggers.
Hold’em Fence Co. average time to drill 48″ deep 12″ diameter: 23 min

Sand Stone
Both types of bit will drill through sand stone in relatively good time. Again, the powdered sand stone is very hard to get out of the hole with a bullet tooth bit. A little more water will be needed than with harder rock types when using the core bit.
Hold’em Fence Co. average time to drill 48″ deep 12″ diameter: 3 min
Flint & Granite
In most of our side by side comparisons (there have been hundreds), we have lost patience watching the bullet tooth bit turn without making any visible progress. The best time drilling granite I have witnessed with the bullet tooth was 5 hours and 45 min to drill 2’2″ thick granite. With plenty of water and a little patience, the core bit will always get the job done.
Hold’em Fence Co. average time to drill 48″ deep 12″ diameter: 49 min
